I believe that Billy McComb made these popular as a comedy item when using a dye tube. He changed a white silk into a red one. He proceeds to explain the trick and shows that two silks are used, a red and a white one. He repeats the trick, and it goes apparently wrong as he now has a silk that is half red and half white.
