Performer begins by displaying a large plastic silk-screened picture of a traffic light (the silk-screened artwork itself is so vibrant, the kids will automatically love it from the beginning). Printed in the circles where the lights should be are the words “GO,” “SLOW,” and “STOP.” But wait! There aren’t any colors. What to do?
The performer wipes the front of the drawing with his star-studded “magic cloth,” and when he’s done, sure enough, the colors are there. However, the words are in the wrong places! Now it says “GO” in the red light, “STOP” in the yellow light, and “SLOW” in the green light! Oh, no!
The performer gives the board another wipe with the magic cloth and now the words have all been wiped away, but now there are stars all over the traffic light! ARGH! The kids go nuts! Undaunted, the performer covers the front of the picture with the magic cloth and has all the children shout the magic words, “LOOK BOTH WAYS!” Frantically, they yell the words really loud, and when the performer removes the magic cloth, the stars are now gone, the words are gone, and the three lights are colored in red, yellow, and green. But now, the colors are in the wrong order: red is at the bottom, yellow is in the middle and green is at the top of the stoplight! Everything is upside-down! At this point, the children are in hysterics and are quick to let the performer know!
So, the performer holds the entire picture upside down and shows them that the colors are now in the correct position! “No, no, no!! Now the whole picture is upside down!” they shout. Sighing heavily, the performer puts the picture back upright and, since the traffic light is obviously not working, hangs a big broken sign on the front of the light. Getting the kids to shout a new magic word, “STOP, LOOK, LISTEN!” When he removes the broken sign, the colors are now in the correct order but unfortunately, there are stripes of red, yellow, and green in each of the lights! Oh, no!
The performer, clearly having enough of this tom foolery, quickly puts the broken sign back on the picture and gets the kids to shout yet another magic spell, “SAFETY FIRST!” They do, and when the broken sign is removed, the lights are finally fixed. The top tight is red, the middle light is yellow, and the bottom light is green! THANK GOODNESS!
The performer explains to all the children that the most important thing is not whether the lights are in the right order, or what colors the lights actually are. The most important thing to remember is “SAFETY FIRST.” Turning around the broken sign, there, screened on the back is a cute drawing of a policeman saying “REMEMBER, SAFETY FIRST!”
